U-11 Paul Fitzgerald Cup: Cabinteely FC 0-0 (pens) St. Joseph’s Boys AFC
We’ve finally managed to catch up with the news of our DDSL U-11A team’s magnificent Paul Fitzgerald Cup final win against neighbours St. Josephs Boys AFC.
This is the first time that a Cabo team won this, the top level cup competition in the DDSL. Well done to them!
Last Sunday’s match took place in the AUL Complex and started at a furious pace, with both teams looking to make an early mark.
Cabo played out from the back with confidence, while Joeys choose the long ball approach in a game only fit for a cup final.
The first half was fairly balanced with both goalkeepers called into action to keep the score level.
Joeys created some good chances with long balls to Michael Cherico, who was denied by superb bravery by Cabo’s goalkeeper Tadhg Tracey.
Cabo persisted with playing some fine football from the back to front, resulting in chances from Hugh Parker and Jamie Ryan being saved by Derry Maloney from Joeys.
Head injuries to Cabo’s Robert Kelly and Cian Verhoeven forced them to make early changes but, with the strength and depth of this team, the changes went unnoticed and the team continued to build confidence.
The second half saw Cabo growing in confidence and enjoy more and more possession. Joeys fought back well and their defence dealt with attack after Cabo attack.
Joeys broke well on the counter-attack and tested the Cabo defence with long balls over the top. With Tadhg Tracey in superb form, there was little chance of anything getting by the Cabo ‘keeper.
Cabo created many chances to score, with the final chance coming within minutes of full-time. With some clever passing from the back, they peeled open the Joeys’ defence only to see Jamie Ryan’s superb 20-yard shot saved by the Joeys’ ‘keeper.
The full-time whistle was followed by a nail-biting penalty shoot-out, where Cabinteely showed their composure and sealed a well-deserved victory for our U-11A team – you can clearly tell from the lads’ response that they were certainly delighted with the outcome!
Well done to both teams on a very entertaining game and thanks to all the support for both teams.
